SIGNARAMA Birmingham South's road safety message
As part of their road safety campaign the West Midlands Fire service is trying to help reduce the numbers of youngsters killed or seriously injured on the counties roads. This work involves working with schools and groups of young people and in order to illustrate their messages the Red Watch crew at both Bickenhill and Solihull fire stations are using a specially designed car.
The car, a red Ford Fiesta, emphasises the main causes of road accidents in young drivers. To help them create the design for the car, the West Midlands Fire Service called on SIGNARAMA Birmingham South. Located in Solihull the SIGNARAMA team worked closely with Red Watch Commander Steven Hodgetts. The work involved creating impact damage to one side of the car and applying vinyl graphics to illustrate the causes of road accidents in young drivers. Slogans include "drugs don't affect me", "just one more for the road" and "come on faster, we're never going to get there." On the damaged side of the car photos have been used to illustrate the injuries that can be caused by road accidents along with the slogan "Dying to Drive".
The team at SIGNARAMA Birmingham South had two weeks to create the damage on the car and devised the graphics using a Graphtec plotter. The designs were then printed onto Hexis Vinyl and Metamark Digital Vinyl using a Roland Versa Camm printer. Jeremy Andrews, SIGNARAMA Birmingham South MD says; "We were delighted to be involved with this project and to help keep costs down we donated the graphics. For us the biggest challenge of the project was applying the vinyl to the damaged side of the car."
Red Watch Commander Steven Hodgetts says; "This car is a fantastic resource for us, and in the short time we have had it, it has already been put to good use. The visual nature of the car helps to graphically illustrate to young drivers the consequences of their actions. We have also used it in our work with West Midlands Police as they try to combat street racing by youngsters in cars and on motorbikes. Finally I would like to thank Jeremy and his team for all their help and assistance in making this project a reality."
